Our story

Groombridge Women’s Institute was formed in 1924 and relaunched in 2014, changing its time from an afternoon meeting to a more sociable and inclusive evening meeting. We have adopted a modern approach to our meetings whilst acknowledging the traditions and heritage of the WI.

We offer a rich and lively programme of regular monthly meetings and clubs which include crafts, active sessions such as Tai Chi, belly dancing and Pilates as well as securing topical and engaging speakers. Recent talks have been on the subjects of breast care and reconstruction, the Suffragette movement, First Aid, How to Prepare a Meal for £1, homeopathy and nutrition. We have bird-watched on the Ashdown Forest, painted without brushes, made Easter posies, and heard from Prince Philip’s Royal Protection Officer. Members are encouraged to suggest ideas for future meetings and activities.

Our members mainly come from within Groombridge and neighbouring towns and villages. We are a friendly bunch of approximately 45 ladies who have great fun when we can meet. Our ages range from early 30s to 80s. We offer complimentary wine (in teacups!) and snacks at all our meetings and meet on the 4th Thursday of every month from 7.30pm.

If you would like more information about our WI and have a friendly chat, please contact our President Sarah who would would be delighted to speak to you on 07711 286776 or email her at president@groombridgewi.com.
